Aloha Niu Valley Middle School Families,

Following assessments of our school campus, we will reopen for students and staff tomorrow Aug. 19 with a 1-6 period schedule. Power was restored to our campus this afternoon. The schedule will be reviewed by teachers tomorrow morning during homeroom.

Our phone lines will not work until tomorrow around 7:30AM as we are powering on our full network in the morning as we want to avoid any possible power surges to our network equipment from this evening.

In the event that we lose power tomorrow:

-Food will be cooked at Aina Haina Elementary School.
– We will blow whistles to signal bell changes.
– We have acquired an analog phone in the office that can accept and make phone calls. The phone number for this office phone is 808-377-2440. Please note that this phone does not have a voicemail so you are unable to leave messages. Our office hours are from 7:30AM-4:00PM.
-To report any absences or tardies you can also email Ms. Windy Maio, one of our Office Assistants, at windy.maio@k12.hi.us.

Some areas around our campus have been marked off with yellow caution tape to mark areas where a tree branch may be overhead or where we want to notify students and staff to avoid.  We had a large portion of the roof membrane from C-building come off during the weekend due to the storm.  The roof was promptly inspected by the DOE and a roofing contractor.  The contractor removed debris from the area yesterday.

For time being, we want all students and staff to avoid walking on the grassy areas makai (toward the sea) of C-building as there may be residual roof material debris in the grass. We have these areas marked with yellow caution tape and orange stanchions.

We recognize that some employees and their families continue to experience significant impacts from the storm.  Mahalo to everyone who supported campus assessments, recovery efforts, and to all employees for their flexibility and continued support of our students and community.

Finally, our Open House originally scheduled for Thursday, August 20 has been rescheduled to Thursday, September 3rd at 5:00-7:15pm.

We look forward to seeing our students and families tomorrow!

Sincerely,
Jeffrey Shitaoka
Principal
